Hi everyone,
Thank you and welcome to Lotus support coordination services. My name is Precious. I am a learning disability nurse (UK term equivalent to intellectual disability), I did my nurse training in the UK and everything i did in the program was specific to intellectual disabilty. In my journey I have also completed a master’s degree in mental health nursing and have worked in different organisations, NGOs, government and educational instutions.
Whilst working in these different areas i identified that there was a lack of knowledge regarding mental illness and intellectual disabilities. This led to the development of this training. Last week on the 26/08/2020 was with first session we had. It validated for me the need to have these kind of training but i also identified that there is a need for either group or one to one supervision especially when working with individuals with multiple complexities. I see this as a form of professional development as well as a chance for self care ( Sharing is caring) . In my last Zoom session with different members we decided to have group session once a fortnight, to debrief, to discuss about how to better engage our participants and get some suggestions for working with our most difficult participants. I believe this to be a positive move towards self care as well as improving the outcomes for partcipants.
The first part of the training focuses of psychotic disorders and management of them. The second part addresses mood disorders, anxiety, management of suicidal behaviour. The last bulk of the 2nd session will be about what is recovery and how this is implemented when working with individuals in the community.
